Top Complaints and Issues with the GMC Sierra 1500: Is Your Vehicle a Lemon?

Trucks like the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 are made to execute tasks. According to the automaker, it is well-known for its "trailering capabilities." However, a growing number of owners are having serious issues that General Motors is unable to resolve with their trailer brakes.  They also complain about malfunctioning engines, faulty electrical systems, and other problems with the braking system.

Most Common Problems

28 customers filed complaints with the 2022 GMC Sierra with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) between February 16, 2022, and February 1, 2023. The brakes, engine, and electrical system are the most frequently encountered issues. However, the concerns also cover six more parts and systems. These include the vehicle's speed control, lane departure, forward collision avoidance, steering, and powertrain.
One of the powertrain problems is that a 2022 Sierra's transmission needs to be replaced after only 170 miles. This came about following the illumination of the check engine warning light.

Another complaint, pertaining to a powertrain issue, describes how a Sierra rolled backwards while in park. The truck struck the Georgian owner twice as he attempted to stop and steer it. "I had some minor wounds, but happily I wasn't completely crippled. To ensure that this problem doesn't cause harm to any other person or people, a thorough investigation into this is necessary.

Another complaint details power steering and electronic stability control (ESC) malfunctions. An owner from North Dakota has complained that the truck is hard to maneuver and drive without power steering. Additionally, because the ESC isn't engaged, the truck slides when turning turns.

Problems with the Brakes

There are 14 complaints about brake troubles, ranging from antilock braking system malfunctions to trailer brakes that disengage and are inoperable. There have also been concerns that the antilock braking system (ABS) modules and/or brake master cylinder assemblies on the new 2022 Sierras needed to be updated. In one instance, the New Mexico owner was informed in March 2022 that no master cylinder assemblies were available. This came after "a whole slew of warnings and warning lights" were displayed by the truck. "Service ESC, Service Trailer Brake System, Service Brake Assist, Reduced Steering Assist Drive Cautiously, and Finally Brake System Failure 43 MPH top speed" were among them.
The ABS module and brake master cylinder were replaced for a Texas-based owner. This came about because the Sierra brakes did not react or slow down. The "service vehicle warning light" came on first. Then the warning lights for the ESC, trailer brake, and brakes came on. The car was transported to a nearby dealer, where the ABS module and brake master cylinder were changed.

General Motors' Reaction

Diagnostic problem codes are covered in a few service bulletins that are kept on file with the NHTSA (DTCs). Warning messages are frequently sent to 2022 Sierra owners who have brake issues, as was indicated in the complaints above. They usually accompany an alarm for a general check engine problem. However, nothing in this TSB directly addresses the brakes.

However, there is a TSB that impacts the 2022 Sierra GMC, 2022 GMC Yukon XL, 2022 Cadillac Escalade ESV, and other 2022 Chevrolet models, as well as the electrical system, service brakes (air), and trailer hitches. According to preliminary information (PI) sent to dealers in September 2022, some customers might report that the driver information center (DIC) displays a Service Trailer Brake notice when they "connect a trailer to the truck." It says that "GM Engineering is aware of the issue and working on a fix," even if the reason is unknown. They commit to updating the PI as new data becomes available. There was still no update as of February 8, 2023.

Engine and Electrical Issues

Truck engines are crucial for supplying dependable power, but when they break down, drivers and their passengers can get into serious difficulties. An Oklahoman owner is the source of one of the six NHTSA complaints under the Engine category. It claims that the engine began to make a loud banging noise that sounded like "a piston trying to shoot out of (the) engine" after the truck had been driven for less than three months. really loud. I was terrified to operate it. "We've had a few (2022 GMC Sierra 1500s) come back for lifter problems," the dealership responded.

Problems with the Engine

A truck's engine is necessary to deliver dependable power, but this particular engine is a disgrace to the pickup lineup.

"Purchased 2022 GMC Sierra on 1/18/2022 with 0 miles on it," reads another NHTSA complaint. The engine began to make a loud knocking noise on April 8, 2022.resembled a piston attempting to shoot out of the engine. really loud. I was terrified to operate it. When we brought it to the dealership, they informed us that other customers had returned because of lifter issues. I'm not really pleased with my brand-new truck that I bought and haven't driven for more than three months.

In case this wasn't sufficient, refer to Service Bulletin #PIP5844. It says that after changing the oil and filter, DTC P06DD is set since there is no oil pressure. It occurs as a result of the filter being emptied and drained. But following an oil change, the filter is always drained and briefly empty. Trouble codes shouldn't be set as a result of this unless the system—which the Sierra 1500 is—is faulty.
